Your Tulsa Carpet Cleaning experts can help with smells and with stains.

After identifying smells that we need to remove, the next thing we notice as you walk us through your home or business are any stains that may be present in your carpets. Just like anything, and sometimes it seems everything, can stain your clothes, there are an endless possibility of things that could stain your carpets.

You may be asking, “with so many things that can stain my carpets, is there anything I can do myself to remove them, or do I need a professional carpet cleaning for every stain?” The Tulsa area carpet cleaning experts at Master Clean have some helpful tips for you to use to tackle stains in between your regular cleanings.

Most Common Stain Types

The possibilities of stains on your carpet are endless. Food, drinks, art & crafts, makeup, hair dye, markers, pet stains, foot traffic stains, grass, construction…the list is truly endless.  It can be overwhelming to think of all the things that can stain your carpets! Here are just a few of the most common types of stains and what you can do yourself to try to keep them from discoloring your carpets.

Pet Stains:

I think every single pet owner knows the frustrations that come with pet stains.  Whether during the potty-training stage of a new puppy, or an upset stomach of a cat with a hairball.  Every pet owner would agree that pet stains are likely the very most common type of carpet stain.  As frustrating as pets can be, we still love them and could not make it through life without them.  So thankfully, there are some methods and substances to use that can not only get rid of the odor associated with pet stains, but also help to remove any staining left behind on the carpets.

Pet stains on a carpet

First, clean up the initial mess.  The sooner the better.  As soon as you know your pet has had any type of accident, clean it up! If there is solid debris from the mess on the carpet, use gloves, paper towels or toilet paper, pick it up and dispose of it. If it is wet, just blot it up to soak up the moisture.  You don’t want to smear or rub the mess.  So just blot at it to remove as much moisture as possible.  Blot repeatedly until the carpet is almost dry to the touch and the stain is gone.

If the stain as already dried into the fibers of the carpet.  Moisten it back up.  Then follow the first step.  You may need to apply some sort of carpet cleaning product that is specifically formulated for pet stains at this point.  Any over-the-counter product you get from a big retail company should work just fine.  The key point to remember when using any carpet product yourself is to be sure to get all the product up out of the carpet after you apply it.  Simply follow the instructions provided with whichever product you use.

Be sure to rinse really well!

After cleaning with the product, then use a towel dampened with water and go over the spot numerous times to make sure all cleaning product is removed.  If you leave product behind, you will make your carpets look worse over time.  Cleaning products left in the fibers of your carpet can actually attract more dirt and create more stains.

To help neutralize the odor from the pet stain, try using a mixture of one part vinegar to one part water.  Put the mixture into a spray bottle and spray it into the spot. Allow the vinegar spray to soak for several minutes, and then blot the area with a clean, dry towel.

Coffee Stains:

Another one of the most common types of stains that we see as your Tulsa Carpet Cleaning professionals is coffee stains.  Coffee stains could discolor your carpets and leave them looking like an ignored pet mess.

If you have spilled coffee in your carpets, the first thing to do is blot the area.  Be careful not to spread the stain.  Use a new towel if one gets too saturated.  And remember to not rub or smear, just blot.

After you blot up the spill, you can make a mixture of vinegar, water, and a gentle non-bleach detergent.  Put the mixture into a spray bottle and spray the stained area down.  Be sure to rinse all the mixture out of your carpet and repeat if necessary.

Many big retail companies offer products that are specifically designed to target coffee stains.  You can try these products but remember to be sure to fully rinse any products out of your carpets.  It is also a good idea to test an inconspicuous area of your carpets first before trying any of these products.  Some of them contain bleach-like chemicals or even bleach – all of which could discolor your carpets worse.

Blood Stains:

Blood stains happen more often than you might think, whether it’s a drop of blood or a lot of blood. There is a lot of anxiety associated with blood stains on our carpets.  However, blood stains are not as bad as they first may appear.  Just like any other carpet stain, the quicker you act the more effective stain removal may be.

First, remember to always use cold water when working with blood spots on your own.  This is important because blood coagulates with heat. Cold will help prevent the blood from permeating deep into the carpet fibers.

Fill a spray bottle with 2 tsp. of a grease-fighting detergent, such as Dawn dish soap, then cold water and spray on the stain.  Liberally moisten the spot so that the whole stain is soaked. Then use a paper towel or a white, dry cloth to blot the spot so that the blood will be transferred to the cloth. Rinse with cold water and repeat if necessary.  Be sure that all the soap is thoroughly rinsed from the carpet or you will create an even bigger mess.

A good product to use on blood stains is OxiClean.  Because it is bleach free and has abilities to oxygenate with most stains, it is ideal for blood stains.  OxiClean instructions say to dilute with warm water, but cold water works too and is what you will want to use for blood stains.  But the diluted OxiClean onto the blood stain, blot dry, the rinse and repeat as necessary.

Removing blood stains may take persistence and a lot of work, but after several tries, you should be able to get the blood out.

Ink Stains:

Another common carpet stain is ink stains.  We all know how difficult and even damaging ink stains can be.  Some of them act like a dye and do have the abilities to permanently discolor your carpets.  But there are some household items you can try before losing hope.

Dampen a clean white cloth with isopropyl alcohol (the higher percentage of the active ingredient the better). Then dab/blot the wet cloth on the ink stain.  Be very careful not to scrub or rub! You don’t want to smear the ink stain and spread it. Let it soak for a few minutes and then use a liquid friendly vacuum to remove the excess moisture.

You may need to repeat this process a few times.  Other household items may have enough of an alcohol content to work the same. Hairspray or nail polish removers are examples of other products that may work.   Just be certain that you fully rinse any of these chemicals out of your carpets, then blot or vacuum until completely dry.

It’s also always a good idea to perform a test run on an inconspicuous spot of your carpet before putting chemicals down to be certain they don’t do damage to the types of carpet fibers you have.
